Umm, in a story a recurring element that is like, symbolic somehow, not symbolism--whats it called?

It's some kind of literary element and for the life of me, I can't remember the name. But if like a circle kept appearing in a story in different places, and you don't realize it unless you realize it is a..."this"! argh, WHAT IS IT CALLED?????
