How did a loss of faith in religious/political leaders contribute to the collapse of the Aztec Empire?

It wasn't a loss of faith in religious/political leaders, but european disease. Dogs were eating the dead in the streets because there wasn't enough healthy people to take care of the rotting corpses. Then the Spanish returned with their indian allies and destroyed the remainder of the Aztec empire in bloody house to house fighting.
